I remember an article in Sysadmin Magazine about exactly this.  Given that I 
tend to archive a lot more than just my email, I went back and found the 
article.  It was written by Robert Bond.  The title was, "An SQL archive for 
Email and MIME attachments."  It appears to be just what you are looking for.
